The Islamic Republic of Iran will hold its 13th presidential elections on June 18. The vote follows the parliamentary elections of Feb. 2020, in which out of almost 58 million eligible voters, only some 24.5 million cast their ballots. With only a 42% turnout, it was the lowest since the 1979 Iranian Revolution. In comparison, the lowest figure recorded for a presidential election thus far was in 2013, when incumbent Hassan Rouhani was first voted into office on the back of only 50.70% turnout. Given that the Islamic Republic in part claims legitimacy on the basis of turnout in its elections, the current trend is a major problem....
